You’ve just spent a fortune on a nice new marble or stone floor so why would you possibly want to grind it?

All marble and stone restoration and polishing involves some element of grinding, but it is usually done on a very small scale, removing a microscopic layer from the surface of the material to correct the dull, dirty and lifeless look created by etching, light staining and surface scratching. Physically grinding a floor down any further is usually only necessary when there’s a serious problem – either the floor has been badly damaged by deep scratching and serious abuse or there’s a problem with “lippage”.

So what is lippage? Lippage is the term given to tiles laid unevenly with corners and edges not flush, and is solely due to bad installation. During the “boom” years in Ireland a lot of marble and stone floors were laid by people who just didn’t have the experience and knowhow to do so, resulting in a whole lot of lippage.

Grinding is a very intensive job, and a very aggressive procedure, using heavy duty diamond disks and machinery. It is an extreme solution, but one which gives a fantastic end result that can leave your floor looking almost like a single slab of stone. It is imperative that the work be carried out by someone extremely experienced as incorrect grinding procedure can literally ruin your floor beyond repair. For more information on the procedure involved see our “Platinum Solution” in our Services and Solutions section. If you don’t want to go to the extreme of grinding, MarbleCare have other solutions that can help lessen the effects of lippage, contact us for details.
