Project Description

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium carbonate in the form of the mineral calcite, most commonly formed from shells, coral, bones and other organic matter in clear, shallow marine waters or lakes. Layer after layer is built up over millions of years and compressed to form solid stone. The organic bodies on which the calcite settles are often preserved as fossils, clearly visible in the limestone.

Limestone is generally a medium-hard stone of fine, sandy appearance with occasional prominent grains or veins. Sometimes it is sold in Ireland as marble, though it is a very different stone to work with.

Limestone used for flooring is generally available in either a highly polished finish or a honed (semi-polished) finish, both of which can become dull, worn and scratched with time. The most common problems we encounter with limestone are loss of shine, scratching, staining and etching, chipping, cracking and excessive lippage on badly laid floors, as well as problems caused by incorrect sealing and maintenance. Don’t worry, MarbleCare have solutions to deal with all of these problems and more! See our Cleaning and Restoration section for more details.

Limestone offers unparalleled beauty, permanence and uniqueness, and adds true value to any home. Other floor coverings may go in and out of fashion but a well laid and well maintained stone floor is timeless and adds to both the enjoyment of, and resale value of, any property. To protect your investment it is important that a professional company such as MarbleCare, specialising exclusively in marble and stone, maintains your floors periodically. Limestone cleaning, restoration and polishing are highly skilled procedures and should not be confused with mere “floor cleaning”. Inexperienced individuals, such as tilers, carpet cleaners, wood floor refinishers, and others who don’t specialise exclusively in maintenance of limestone and other stone, can inadvertently ruin a beautiful floor and involve the owner in further expense for professional repair. MarbleCare provides a complete range of services and solutions to keep your limestone looking like new and protect your investment, as well as providing every customer with an exclusive MarbleCare Easy-Aftercare Program custom-tailored to your individual floor type.
